If you’re looking for somebody who will always be there for you Hold On…Hold Onto Me….

This is a verse from one of my favorite jazz groups Incognito. It talks about how even in the midst of our struggles, we need to have that one person who we know will be there to encourage and lift us up to reach our dreams.

The other night my girlfriend and I were watching the BET Image Awards when noted director Tyler Perry was making his acceptance speech for his many accomplishments in cinema and theatre. He talked about when he sent in his first job application the manager noticed that it was incomplete. The manager told him, “That’s your problem. You never finish anything.” Tyler stated that after that moment he was going to finish whatever he started. Even when he was homeless he never let go of his dream.

We talked about our dreams about being writers and I began to think about all of the issues I was dealing with: job, a challenging school schedule, and other factors that I was allowing to become an obstacle to my dream. She told me that no matter the situation we’d do it together.

One aspect of love is being there for that person in the midst of their challenges and encourage them to reach their dreams. It’s so easy to get sidetracked with all of the concerns of the world and in our everyday lives that we let our dreams go by the wayside. What I realized the other night was that our dream is that ray of light shining through the caves of life.

We must ask ourselves this – in our everyday conversation, how often are we talking about our dreams? What feedback are we getting? Which friends are we listening to? The one who says, “That’s impossible!” or the ones that are saying, “Go for it!”

Being that person who tells us, “I’m here to support you. You don’t have to go through this alone.” That is what the world needs more of, whenever we see someone battling in their spirit, we must be that person that tells someone, “Hold Onto Me. We’ll get through this together.”

Who has always been there to hold you up? Who is looking for you for encouragement?

Someone once told me that your heart is like a garden full of flowers.  Some will walk by your garden and see nothing.  Some will walk into your garden and steal flowers.  And others will come into your garden and not only help you to remove the weeds, but also plant more flowers for you.  These are the friends you should keep.  These are the relationships that you should keep.  Guard your garden, guard your heart.

I had a conversation with one of my friends the other day.  We both were able to catch up with each other and see how each other were doing.  During that time while we were hanging out I realized how blessed I was to have him as friend.  Although we sometimes get into small arguments, one thing that I value most about our friendship is we are able to speak truth and in love to help each other be better people.  When one falls, the other is able to lift the other up.
